How the FIFA Group Stage Points System Works

In the FIFA World Cup group stage, each group contains four teams playing a round-robin format (each team plays every other team once). Teams earn 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. After all group matches, teams are ranked by total points. Tiebreakers are decided by goal difference (GD), then goals for (GF), then head-to-head results. The top 2 teams from each group advance to the knockout round.

Points Table Simulator FAQ

How does the Points Table Simulator work?
Select any group (Group A to L) from the top tab bar. Enter predicted goals for the upcoming fixtures, and the standings will dynamically recalculate points, goal differences, and re-order rankings instantly.
How do third-place teams qualify for the Round of 32?
Under the 48-team tournament structure, the top two teams from all 12 groups automatically advance. They are joined by the 8 best third-placed teams, who are compared globally in the Live Third-Place comparison table.
What tiebreaker rules are used in group standings?
Our calculator uses official FIFA tiebreaker rules: total points, then goal difference (GD), then goals scored (GF), then wins, followed by head-to-head results and alphabetical fallback.
Can I simulate all groups at once?
Yes. The calculator holds your predicted scores for all 12 groups in memory as you toggle between tabs. You can view the cumulative outcome in the Third-Place comparison table at the bottom.
What does the "Simulate Group" button do?
If you want to save time, click the "Simulate Group" button. It will randomly generate realistic scorelines (with home-advantage biases) for all scheduled games in the active group.
Is my simulation data saved?
All match predictions are stored strictly in your browser's local state. No inputs are sent to any external server, ensuring 100% privacy.
